Closure of Oxford Sailing Club from 22nd March.

Published 09:59 on 22 Mar 2020

14th May:

Hello Everyone

As you are aware, the official Government response to the Covid-19 crisis was updated yesterday, 10 May, and I am pleased to say the Committee are responding quickly and notifying the members of the following points:

  • The Government has eased some restrictions on the amount of exercise and the number and type of outings individuals may take. Strict social distancing remains in place.
  • We have started discussions with Thames Water. At the time of writing, it is likely that TW will reopen public access to the site from this weekend. This means members will be able to access the boat park. I will notify you when it has been confirmed.
  • The water remains closed to all water sports activity until further notice.
  • The clubhouse remains closed until further notice. This means there is no access to the toilets, office, catering, first aid or changing rooms. If you have keys to the clubhouse or find it open for any reason, you must not enter the building.
  • The Committee are in contact with the RYA, TW and our insurers, amongst others, to expedite club activities as soon as we can whilst keeping everyone safe and within the regulations. We will update the membership when there is news to pass on. We are currently waiting for RYA guidance and we have a number of issues to resolve with regards to safety in general which are affecting all similar clubs.

The watchword is patience. Every day I check the weather as though I am going out and there is no-one keener than me to get back on the water. I hope and wish for it to be soon, but we must work both within the Government's requirements and in the best interests of the club as a whole. We will demonstrate that we can operate responsibly and safely, progressively, step-by-step and as quickly as we can.

Wishing everybody continued good health, and in anticipation of some good sailing to come (but not yet!)

20th April: The latest lockdown exit date set by the UK Government is 7th May so all activities/duties upto this date have been cancelled.

    22nd March:

In light of the continuing Covid-19 crisis, the club has reluctantly had to close and Thames Water have closed the site. We will keep a close eye on the recommendations of the government and Thames Water, and keep you informed as we progress.

The club requests all members to cease coming to the club to sail.

I do ask you to renew your membership if you can and we will review what the membership fee is once the club resumes with a credit if due. Equally, if you have paid in advance and would like your membership returned, this will be done on request without a reason. The club realises many people's financial situation has changed radically and rapidly recently.

At some point, we will all be back in the clubhouse, and enjoying sailing and seeing our old friends.

Until then I wish you the best for you and your families and would like to thank on behalf of all of OSC and beyond the dedication of our members that are serving us in front roles.

    Take care.
