New to Sailing & Windsurfing

Why join Oxford Sailing Club (OSC)?

Oxford Sailing Club, based at Farmoor Reservoir, offers great leisure facilities for sailing, exercise, learning and socialising.

Who can join?

If you want to sail or windsurf with OSC on Farmoor Reservoir, you need to be competent at sailing or windsurfing. If you're new to our sport or want to use our Club boats and kit then you'll need a minimum of Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Dinghy Sailing Level 2, Youth Stage 3, or RYA Start Windsurfing or a similar qualification.

How to obtain your sailing or windsurfing skills

  • Easy - train at Farmoor with Oxford Sail Training Trust (OSTT). OSTT run adult and youth training courses throughout the year and will quickly get you to the level where you will be competent enough to sail one of our Club boats or use our windsurf kit

or

  • Choose - from the many national RYA training centres; Typically courses often run over a week-end and can cost less than £200.

OSC Club Membership

Once you've achieved RYA Level 2 or Stage 2, you can apply for membership which is also discounted for your first year. We're a friendly club and there's always someone on hand to show you the ropes or help you use your own or the Club's kit & boats.

For the competitive minded

Throughout the year, in addition to casual and buddy sailing we organise regular race events. Depending on your skill level and ambitions, you can choose from informal and improvers racing through to the competitive Sunday fleet racing. Whatever level you choose there is a plethora of trophies to be won which are awarded at the annual dinner and prizegiving usually held during the Christmas period and on-the-day prizes for children and adults for the informal monthly Novice & Casual days.

A few words about safety

Your safety is our primary concern. Powered rescue craft are on hand for our coaching sessions and when we run our regular races, plus we have a two-boat rule (buddy sailing) so that no one is ever alone on the water when free sailing. There are several Club social media groups that you can use to find a sailing buddy when you want to free sail. Buoyancy Aids are mandatory for dinghy sailors and power boat users as is adequate liability insurance if you're using your own boat or kit.
